Mass, More snow, Movie

Snow blower time!! Got another inch of snow over the night. Plan Mass, volunteering at the rectory for a short while, snow blowing, and off to a movie this afternoon with the card playing ladies.
Hope your day is warm, healthy, safe, and in touch.

Mass always, Errands maybe

Still have snow on the ground.

Busy day yesterday: Mass in AM followed by 4 hours volunteering at the rectory. Took a friend to lunch for her birthday, met/visited with another friend at the house, took the grille off the refrigerator to sweep the dust the off the compressor coils, washed/folded/put away a couple of loads of clothes, read, and went to bed. (Took me longer to get the #^*^(^**&%+ grille off then it did to get the sweeper and clean the coils). Pedometer time again---bet I logged 7 to 8 miles yesterday.
Off to Mass this AM (St Thomas Becket Feast Day), run some errands, bring in more firewood, pick up the house, read, and chill out by the fireplace this evening.
Stay warm, healthy, safe, and keep in touch.

Feast Days

Another great Feast Day today. The Holy Innocents. Imagine what it would be like to be rousted out of familiar surroundings, on a minutes notice, with only the clothes on your back and take a journey into a strange country without funds, map, etc. to save the life of your child.

Late in blogging today---will catch up with things tomorrow. Cards went well---I have been asked back to play another hand or two. My journeys are so trivial. Hope yours are healthy, safe, and you keep in touch.

Snow

Love this time of year with all the Church feasts. Today is the feast of the Holy Family. We have so much to be thankful for as a family as we bring this year to a close.

Brought in firewood, built a fire, and sat by the fireplace reading most of last night. As much as I have enjoyed the snow I have equally hated the brutal cold. Went to Mass yesterday evening. Planning to go out for a Sunday newspaper and play cards/have lunch with friends this afternoon. Have been given good pointers from family members on good behavior at card parties. Will take it all into consideration but no promises not to be competitive. After all, isn't that what it is all about? I am in constant competition with myself and still trying to catch up---think about it.

Also, think about keeping warm, healthy, safe, and keeping in touch.

Snow

Snow blower/shovel works--just used it on the back walkways as the wind was blowing. Figured the the wind would either cover up what I had done or would blow away most of the snow and wouldn't have to use it at all in front driveway. The wind is brutal, temp 22 degrees this AM but feels much colder. (Pic courtesy of Toro Corp---don't bother to enlarge---neither you nor I know who the guy is operating the snow blower---and where the heck is his hat?)
Plan a quiet day: Mass, possibly breakfast with a friend, possibly a movie, possibly use the snow blower on the driveway if the wind settles down---just a lot of possibilities---no set plans.
Please stay warm, healthy, safe, and keep in touch.

Merry Christmas

Wanted to share a message I received from one of my children:
"I share my Christmas wishes with you...May we all recapture our balance this coming year. Let the loss of Kelli, Pop and of Ken not overshadow our lives, but let the beauty of the life they lived, once again, brighten our days." Now, that just about says it all. Thanks for my wonderful family--what a blessing of new life for all of us!

The Journey

Think of the journey---the hardship of going through the desert on a donkey and finding no comfortable accommodations.

My wish today is that we all stop and take the time to give thanks for the many blessings that surround us.

Didn't happen.

Let it snow

Busy day yesterday--Mass, volunteered at rectory, ran errands, drove to Newton to shop at my favorite kitchen store and found just what I was looking for--a stone pestle and mortar to grind up spices, herbs, etc. Getting everything on hand for my winter soup and stew fest.

Talk about excitement here. Anticipating using that snow blower before the week is out. Yak tracs, boots, gloves, hats, and coat are ready for the event. This could be fun or a major fiasco. Fun if snow blower works or---pics of it on the roof or crushed under a truck in the street if it doesn't work. Either way it will be great exercise and a great excuse to play in the snow. Better to have regression than aggression---so pray it works.

Off to Mass and then spice/winter vegetable shopping tour. Hope your day goes well, staying healthy, being safe, and keeping in touch.

Just Moi

Sunny day--49 degrees. Back from Mass, stopped by Mexican Market to get peppers, spices, etc. to make posole. Planning on making more winter vegetable stews/soups and roasted winter vegetables. Danny spoiled me with the wonderful chowder and roasted vegetables. Cannot duplicate them but will give it a go. Vegetables should be roasted. Repeat after me---vegetables should be roasted.

Plan a quiet week, will have lunch one day with out of town friends, celebrate Christmas at Mass and chill out at home with the pup posse. Cannot believe we are approaching the end of the year. Looking forward to beginning a new and uneventful year. Have plans to play some cards, walk at least 3 times/day (sans "boys"), and possibly take some line dancing lessons at a near by senior center (for exercise). We'll see how these grand plans pan out.

Have a great day, stay healthy, be safe, and keep in touch.

Better than flowers

Michael won his wrestling match last night 8-2. This picture made the Wichita Eagle high school sports gallery. Great Ashpole form. Makes one proud----what a legacy!!! Will have to muster up the courage to try again to go watch that boy wrestle. Wanted to share this with all of you.

Lilies

Warning: This blog will contain more flower pics---use your discretion while viewing. Mentioned I was searching the Net for lilies--esp. Asiatic. They are so hearty and beautiful. Will look for long lasting blooming and drought resistant ones. Thought I would share some pics so you could also enjoy.
Just gaze and enjoy while I take off for Mass and you finish your week, staying healthy, being safe, and keeping in touch.

Deer, Dogs, and Diner

Thank God I have wheels, ample funds to gas up and go. Mass this AM, run a couple of errands, and then volunteer this afternoon at the Lord's Diner for food prep. Really look forward to doing that--great people to work with, good time spent on helping others.

Thinking of adding more away activities to the day as the deer are in the back field and the dogs are barking, barking, barking, barking, barking...Really gets on my last nerve at 5:30am to hear the incessant yapping. The goods news---it is a weekday, all the neighbors are already awake getting ready for work---bad news---maybe the dogs woke them up and they are also thankful for having wheels and ample funds to gas up and go. The "boys" have no clue this is not the way to start a good day. They (we) need to work on behavior issues.
Okay--enough about Moi--for you, I wish a great day staying healthy, being safe, and keeping in touch.

Flexible

Love being retired--can just change my day in any direction in any second and be happy with the change. Had to wait until my "golden years" to find out I could be flexible and not so directed. Got a lot accomplished yesterday and hopefully will finish up today.

Off to Mass, later breakfast with a friend, and then be flexible the rest of the day----Gee--this might catch on---the flexible thing. Know one thing, I loved being out/about and enjoyed yesterday's sunny day. Also, spent some time this week with some grand kids---that just makes life better no matter how you look at it.
It's your weekend--be flexible, healthy, safe, and keep in touch.

Simplicity

Well, just when you think it can't get colder it does. Let's see---8 degrees this AM. Still nice, dry, no ice but bitterly cold. So, this is December and still seeing touches of green in the back tree grove. Really is beautiful until I come to my senses and figure I am probably looking at a pretty prolific gathering of poison ivy. (B. this picture reminds me of the North Platte hike we took by your house).

Back from Mass. Taking Buster to Vet this AM for yearly checkup and then volunteering at the rectory for awhile this afternoon. Not much else going on except staying warm and that is like watching a pot boil.

Stay warm, healthy, safe, and keep in touch.

Brrrrrrrrrr

Expected the streets to be icy this AM with all the precipitation yesterday. Surprise!--no icy streets. Buy ice melt and a broadcaster and the ice will not appear. It is 11 degrees and chills one to the bone.

Went to Mass, off to run some errands, help w/Church funeral dinner at noon, then back home to stay warm. Had signed up for an Advent Retreat today but it was cancelled late yesterday due to the weather---Oh ye of little faith---this is Kansas!

Maybe snow

This pic was taken last year. These little creatures have really been a joy and such great company. We are very close especially since we are confined to the house with the winter weather.

Speaking of winter weather--it has started to sleet this morning. Was going to run some errands today but may change to have an inside day at least this morning. Cleaned out the fireplace, emptied the shop vac, and replenished the indoor firewood yesterday to prepare for this weather. Will also broadcast some more ice melt on the driveway. That little hand held broadcaster is a gem---really makes it easy to spread the ice melt. May have to have the driveway replaced next summer if we keep getting these icy weather report predictions. Trying to be proactive.

Have a healthy, safe day, and stay in touch.

Lots of Soup

Another early AM, 20 degrees, and dry. Used the ice melt broadcaster on the driveway for the first time yesterday. Was a wet day and expected things to be slick this AM. It worked!!!!---but then realized the whole neighborhood is also dry and no ice. Think the weatherman has some holdings in the ice melt industry---it did not stay wet, freeze, snow as predicted.
Pretty much a quiet day yesterday, Went to Mass in AM, stopped on the way home to gas up, pick up a newspaper, spent most of the day fixing a soup, reading, and watching football by the fireplace with the 3 "boys." Also, restocked the firewood in between football and broadcasting the ice melt in the driveway.
Off to Mass this AM, volunteer awhile at the rectory, make some phone calls, pick up the house, and go through those papers in the office. Have a nice week planned--Holy Day tomorrow, Advent Retreat/Mass/lunch on Wednesday, possibly another movie in the works before the week is over and eating soup everyday. Usually do not eat crackers in my soup anymore--tear apart and eat a Cibata roll with it instead of the crackers. Cannot believe how much stuff I added to the soup--lentils, green chilies, tomatoes, cabbage, onions, celery, red wine vinegar, chicken, chicken/vegetable broth with a heaping teas. of cumin.
Pic of the Day: Miniature Daffodils--taken this Spring. They have come up for several years and happy to say they are spreading. It is so great to see them pop through the ground before anything else---sure sign of Spring.
Hope you have a great start to your week. Stay healthy, be safe, and keep in touch.

Keeping it Real

Weather report: 31 degrees, no snow--still have the snow blower handy---just waiting it out. Thinking of sedating Spencer on the weekends (just kidding). They (we) have been up since 5:15am, still dark outside---have read everything in site though still have the pile of magazines and paperwork still in the office and now as a real kick in the rear--guess who is snoozing in the living room? Surely not me--I have downed 2 strong cups of coffee, now working on a cup of herbal tea, blogging to you, and planning to go to Mass at 8:30am.

Did watch Michael wrestle, Jacob referee yesterday. Loved visiting w/Michael and Jake but really felt out of place without my buddy being there. Having to reinvent myself to find out what this new role entails. Working hard on readjusting to Pops' absence. Feels like part of me is missing---can feel his presence just can't see it. Think it is also the combination of the cold days and long dark nights. How much darkness and night does anyone need? Treated myself to a show yesterday afternoon---Blind Side. True story and very entertaining.

Remember when I mentioned having 1000+ pics of flowers? Sit back---it begins! Sweet autumn clematis vine and silver lace vine on the east fence. I also planted these by the arbor. Should be a nice touch come Spring.

Hope your week end is going well. Keep healthy, be safe, and stay in touch.

Blah, Blah, Blah

Another crisp morning--23 degrees, not windy, "boys" up early but quiet---how nice. Read for a while, plan to go to Mass, maybe breakfast with a friend, and catch a couple of Michael's wrestling matches. Jacob will be one of the referees at the matches so will consider it a "two-fer" day. Speaking of wrestling---Thought I would include a special picture taken when Jake took State in 2003.

The magazine pile is growing smaller, nights growing longer, more idle time, actually watched a movie on TV last night. Still have not sorted through the pile of growing paperwork-----HELP!!!!

That's my day---hope yours is a healthy, safe one, and keep in touch.

Brisk Day

Convinced winter is here--16 degrees this AM. The only breeze is from the "boys" as they run past me, out the dog door barking like animals. The deer were out in the back field most of the day yesterday. Spotlighted the back yard, saw nothing but then I am not as fast as the "boys" or deer and most likely whatever it was causing their barking was long gone before I could even get the spotlight.

Decided to forgo the movie yesterday--just hung around here, read, napped a couple of hours, and sat by the fireplace last night, watching TV, reading, and feeding the "boys" their nightly apple. Am so happy to report their eating is more manageable. No more PC, cheese, chicken broth (just plain dry food) but cannot and will not break them of the apple habit. Remember Pop sitting with them last winter, eating, and feeding them apples. What a fun thing it was to watch all of them so intent on their snack time.
Off to Mass this AM. Spencer has his last Vet check up this afternoon. Hope your day goes quickly so you can enjoy your weekend staying healthy, being safe, and keeping in touch.

Just a Day

Sat by the fireplace last night (thanks Kurt for cleaning the previous ashes/filling the wood rack, etc while you were here), read, watched a little TV and stayed up until 10:00pm. Getting caught up on reading some of the many stack(s) of months worth of magazines. Spent most of the summer out in the yard and couldn't get grounded or was just too tired to read them. Try to read at least 3/night.

Cool here at 21 degrees this AM. It was such a peaceful morning until just a few seconds ago when all I saw was a flash of 3 fluffy tails and heard the deafening barking of 3 little "boys" zip out through the dog door---good news: no odor (skunk)---bad news: the deer in the back field are moving quickly to another eating spot this AM thanks to the "boys."

Thought I would include more pics of the Thanksgiving plaque/stepping stone placement.

What talent---to make both of these special remembrances. Now I am really motivated to complete the flower garden stepping collection. Have several new family members to include to the collection. AH-HA--add that to my list of spring projects.

Off to Mass this AM and possibly see a movie this afternoon. Too cold to be out of doors. Stay warm, stay healthy, be safe, and keep in touch.

Just Today

Wanted to remind all of you a Mass is being said for Pop, Kelli, and Ken this AM at 8:00am at St Patrick Church. Plan to go to that Mass, volunteer at the rectory for several hours, pick up a few things at the store, make a throw together soup, and keep a low key day. Ate my last piece of pumpkin pie yesterday prior to going to the dentist. Might say I have had my fill of pie. Slept well last night---glad the broken tooth is out--can stop fretting about the dental appointments and get moving on. Still working on filing some paperwork---might even build a fire. It is a chilly 37 degrees, windy and feels (per weather report) like 27 degrees with the wind chill.

Things move so quickly--cannot believe Thanksgiving is over. Know I have said this before but truly enjoy having family together. If you were not here in person you were certainly here in thought---and if you only knew how my thoughts worked you would know we had fun. (Thought I would include some pics--this was taken as we gathered while Kurt and Kathy placed the plaque and stepping stone)

Stay warm, healthy, be safe, and keep in touch.

Pepe Le Pew

Watching TV/reading in basement last night, heard the dog door rattle, dogs were off the chair, up the stairs like flashes of light, barking like animals, they ripped through the dog door on pursuit of our invader. By the time I got the spot light they were all in back yard by the fence and all that was left was the terrible odor of our visitor. Thanks be they were not sprayed. The smell was so strong. To all of you who think they are worthless, spoiled little creatures---think again---they are protectors and heroes. Think I will start putting the lock protector portion on the dog door when we are watching TV in the basement. (When I let them back out to do their nightly chore before bedtime the smell was still strong but only by the deck. No residual odor this AM. )

Have I told you---I love living here. Love the owls, foxes, deer, woodpeckers, rabbits, skunks...

Hope your day is a great one----just stay healthy, be safe, and keep in touch.

The Pits

That's what I would call pimento stuffed olives---the pits!!! Saw the dentist this afternoon. That little pit caused a "fatal fracture" to my tooth. A portion of the tooth (loose inside portion) was extracted today and the remainder (outside portion) will be surgically removed by an oral surgeon tomorrow. Surprisingly--I am more comfortable following today's extraction. Really wanted to remove the tooth on my own on Friday--knew it was loose. How old is the age limit for being accepted into dental school?
Busy day tomorrow. Mass in AM, volunteer at rectory for a couple of hours, have lunch with some friends, go to the oral surgeon, and make it home before the sun sets.
So, as I try, so also must you---stay healthy, be safe, and keep in touch.

Good News

The good news is: Everyone made it home safely following the holiday visit. Always a good feeling to know that everyone is safe and sound from their travels. (Kat made it home Friday, Linda and the kids on Saturday, and Kurt yesterday.)
Nippy, 29 degrees here. Back from Mass (7:00am at Church of the Magdalen) so I can call dentist at 8:00am and hopefully get in today to have him take care of this broken tooth. Will probably never eat another olive and am real close to saying that about pumpkin pie---3 meals/day of pie is too much---but easy to chew on one side of your mouth.
Please stay healthy, be safe, and keep in touch.

Quiet on the home front

WOW, the sound of the silence in this house is haunting. Loved having Thanksgiving here and very thankful for the family members who were able to travel. I thank you, the "boys" thank you. The "boys" are still in lounge mode from all of the activity and company---they are definitely attention hounds.

Went to Mass yesterday evening, 38 degrees/windy this AM, planning on chilling out today, reading, possibly a nice afternoon nap, and hanging out with my pup posse. Plan to call dentist first thing in AM to see about repairing my broken tooth. Will more than likely maintain a pumpkin pie and Cool Whip diet until tooth is repaired.

Enjoy your day, staying healthy, being safe, and keeping in touch.

Broken tooth and Thanksgiving

Wonderful Thanksgiving---ate too much, visited w/family, built a fire, watched football, played Blokus...After eating, we gathered in the back yard while the pottery plaque was attached to the arbor and the stepping stone placed under the arbor. Nice touch to the arbor/shade garden, especially since it relates to Kelli and Pop.

Kat returned home today. Kurt, Linda and kids plan to return home tomorrow. Quiet day here-Kurt and Ryan went to play golf. Linda, Maddie, and I were planning on a shopping trip after we ate lunch. I bit into an olive (seedless/pimento), broke a tooth and am now (hopefully) waiting for the dentist to return my call. Most all dental offices here are closed on Fridays--left a 1:30pm message for call back.
Please stay healthy, be safe, and keep in touch.

Thankful for Blessings

Blessings and things to be thankful for:
All travel families have safely arrived...blessing. Received call from a dear friend last night, no signs of cancer cells in her breast, more testing to find treatment for her abnormal mammogram but good news for now...blessing. Cooking will be at a minimum at this house so we can play games and enjoy the company...blessing. Doorways dusted...blessing. Will place paving stone and plaque on Thanksgiving Day---pictures will be taken...blessing. Friendships and closeness of family throughout the year...blessing. More leaves to spread on walking path by east side of house...not a blessing---just a need.
May your day be productive, keep healthy, stay safe, and keep in touch.

Thankful for Thanksgiving

Family members are gathering at the house--their Rottweilers are at home guarding the home fronts and all is well. Off to Mass this AM (Mass said this AM for our family at St Pat's), shopped for some last minute food, ate out, and bought some board games--in particular suggested games such as: Blokus, Whoonu, Mexican Train, and 4 decks of playing cards. We are ready. Plan to clean out game drawer tonight and throw away all of the old worn out cards.

Got a call on my cell phone message today from Ori while LJ was fixing the kids apples (could hear her in the background). He just left a voice mail message--great to hear his voice, unsure of the message, but enjoyed it just the same.

Quiet on the home front

Different morning today---real nice so far---cool, crisp, no wind, no barking dogs---things are good.

Spencer had his trip to the vet yesterday, leg is better but will continue the medication for 2 more weeks with recheck. Thinking he just likes the car ride, extra attention, probably has turned into a medication seeker, and now eats the medication w/o cheese.
Plan to go to Mass, run some last minute errands, and settle in sorting more paperwork, possibly watching some football games this evening. This could all change--I am really getting excited about company coming and am really distracted--nothing new for Moi. I am really looking forward to Thanksgiving and having the house full of family.

Outside, noise, dogs...

Dogs barking outside, dark outside, spot light indicates they are barking at nothing the human eye (mine) can see outside, holler outside for them, make more noise outside with hollering then dogs are doing barking---Ever seen Poms run with tails stretched out?--that's how they looked zipping in the back door. Obviously they hate my hollering. Now, the patio screen door is closed blocking the dog door---I AM IN CONTROL. This reads kind of like a Dick and Jane story. Hear dogs bark, see Mom act out, see dogs look confused, see dogs run, see Mom back at her computer finishing this blog---see things return to "normal" (just for now). (The Thanksgiving drawing is getting near---be excited---I am!!)

The Adoration Chapel renovation is complete and will open this AM after the 8:00am Mass. It really turned out nice. Enjoyed the afternoon at the Lord's Pantry. There are possibly 10-12 volunteers, we put on our caps (bring my own Echo Bay logo hat), aprons, are given tasks, and complete the food prep in approx. 2 to 2 1/2 hours. It is a once a month commitment , mindless but rewarding to do something for someone else.

Mass this AM, Spencer to the Vet at 4:15pm today for leg limp checkup---still favoring it but not like it was. Plan to pick up some groceries, sweep, and dust the house. Hope your day moves fast, stay healthy, be safe, and keep in touch.

Deers and Dogs

Back from Mass, ate a piece of pumpkin pie slathered in Cool Whip, had a cup of coffee, walked out on the back deck and what to my wandering eyes should appear but a doe and a buck in the back field. Note the reclining doe on the right and the rack on the buck standing to her left is barely visible as it blends in with the limbs on the trees. Would love to have a tranquilizer gun to zap the dogs so they would not scare the deer away. Have I told you I love living here--even with the dogs?

Volunteering at the Lord's Diner today and need to be on my way. May your day be good, stay healthy, be safe, and keep in touch. PS--all of you who attend Thanksgiving here will be eligible for the dog drawing---and I am not talking about crayons and paper---you will be able to take a dog home with you. Is that exciting?---- In fact there will be 3 drawings and 3 dogs given away.

Ma's World

Temperature down to 35 degrees, wet outside, and no snow---yet. Quiet weekend. Plan to go to Mass, run errands, and make phone calls today. Still have papers in my office to sort, shred, and file. Just couldn't bring myself to hang out in that room this weekend. Will do it in spurts this week while it is too wet and cold to be out of doors--maybe.

Am working on low dog maintenance and reorganization.
Low dog maintenance: All are totally on dry dog food--Spencer still on weight reduction food, Buster and Rowdy back on Pedigree---no added cheese or broth---just plain dry. No ice cream (commonly known as PC or puppy cup) in the evenings for a whole week. "We"---Moi and the dogs are now sharing/eating an apple each evening---theirs is peeled/mine isn't/they eat half/I eat the other half.

Reorganization: Gathering up all warranty, instruction paperwork on outside tools/machinery and putting them all together in a notebook (in sheet protectors) and storing them in a cabinet in the garage to save trips to basement to go through file cabinets when something breaks down or needs parts.

Stay dry, healthy, safe, and in touch.
